Chapter Eighteen
The next morning, when Jack walked into his office, he found a large white envelope propped up on his desk. He was about to open it when Connie came in, a broad smile creasing her face.
“I got one too,” she announced, waving a heavily embossed card in the air. “It’s an invitation to the Brandt’s cocktail party. They hold one every year about this time. It’s such fun. Everyone goes.” She gave a little laugh and amended that. “Well, just about everyone. It’s a real privilege to be invited.”
Jack pushed the card into his pocket. A party was the last thing he felt like right then. For a moment he thought of finding an excuse and putting in an apology, but dropped the idea before it got off the ground. When the managing director of Bells Biological Research Centre sent an invitation, no one in their right mind would turn it down. Jack’s absence would be noted. And questioned. That was not the kind of attention he needed right now.
Besides, there was a flip side. It occurred to him that a party would provide the ideal opportunity to pick up information. Once there, he’d be able to mingle with the crowd and chat to folk he wouldn’t normally get to meet—people who’d known Bob Evens, guys who’d worked with Bernie Kemp, scientists who worked in the High Security Zone. Chances were that after a couple of drinks, they’d be relaxed and willing to talk.
That evening, when Jack brought up the subject, Maggie’s face lit up. “I can’t wait. If we ask the right people the right questions, we’re bound to dig up something useful.” Her eyes grew thoughtful. “I’ve got a feeling West knows more than he’s letting on. I’ll work on him Saturday night and see if I can get him to open up.”
Jack’s jaw tightened. He didn’t like the idea of Maggie spending time in West’s company, but knew her well enough to keep that opinion to himself. Once Maggie got her mind set on something, it would take more than a few words to persuade her to give it up. So he only said, “Take care, Maggie. Don’t underestimate West. He’s a tricky bastard. Make sure you don’t give away more than you gain.”
Saturday evening, when Jack called to pick up Maggie, she was ready and waiting. She opened the door and, for a moment, all he could do was stand and stare. Maggie looked good no matter what she wore, whether it was jeans and t-shirt or white nurses’ uniform, but in that shimmering evening-gown she looked stunning. Made from some satin-soft fabric, it clung to her figure and swirled about her as she walked. The colour—a deep aqua-marine—matched her eyes and contrasted with the creamy tones of her skin. Her hair, usually tied in a knot at the back of her neck, hung to her shoulders and formed a halo around her face.
“You look beautiful!” he told her. “Just beautiful.”
She flashed him a smile. “Thank you.
